Mother's Day 2025
Genesis 16:1-16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. 5 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” 9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her,
“Behold, you are pregnant
and shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because the Lord has listened to your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man,
his hand against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”
13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
YOU ARE SEEN Gen. 16:13
Many times as moms we can feel “unseen” . Not our physical appearance, but the feelings and thoughts that are deep inside our hearts and minds.
10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her,
“Behold, you are pregnant
and shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because the Lord has listened to your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man,
his hand against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”
13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”
Hagar specifically said, “He’s the God who sees me" because up until this point, she had felt unseen but now she realized that God saw her heart, He saw her thoughts, He saw her fears.
1 SAMUEL 16:7
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'”
He sees our hearts' desires, our labor of love, our dreams and ambitions, our hurts, our worries.
2 Chronicles 16:9a, NLT The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.
His eyes search for those that need to be strengthened, and he meets us right where we are and gives us exactly what we need for the moment.
To know He sees me is to know I am never alone, that He is always near.
You serve a God who sees you. Not only does he see all that you do day in and day out and the efforts that you make, but his view goes so much deeper than that to our innermost thoughts and fears.
2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-4
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles.”
ISAIAH 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
1 PETER 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
These passages remind us that He not only sees what weighs on us but He wants us to hand them over to Him. He comforts us and upholds and strengthens us in our weakest moments.
YOU ARE HEARD
Genesis 16:11…”because the Lord has listened to your affliction..”
He hears you…He hears your thoughts and He hears your prayers.
Just because you can’t see a change doesn’t mean God is not working behind the scenes.
This messenger then tells Hagar “ you will name your child Ishmael which means, “God hears”…
The angel commands her to return to her master Sarai, the woman who has abused her, and her son’s name would be a constant reminder in the tough times when she feels alone, unseen and unheard about the God who does hear her and meets her right where she is.
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
YOU ARE TREASURED
1 Peter 2:9 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
You are a child of the king and specifically moms..you are a daughter of the king. The problem is we have a skewed vision of how a blessed life or the best life now should look.
The blessed life is not the perfect life; the blessed life is the valued life and we serve a God who values us more than anything else in all creation.
V 13. “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.” Hagar goes from a woman who feels alone and hopeless and running to a woman whose eyes have been opened to her worth 7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness this was a woman who had run from a group of people who abused her, looked down on her and cared less about her, who met a God who treasured her so much that He pursued her, into the wilderness, who chased her down to tell her that she was seen, she was heard and that He had great plans for her life..
We see her countenance and attitude change with this conversation. She now has a promise to hold onto.
If you need comfort today, find comfort in the fact that God sees you, He hears you and He knows and treasures you.
